After two weeks of limited testing, Abu Dhabi has now officially launched its driverless robotaxi service. With this step, the UAE capital has become the first city outside the United States to introduce completely autonomous taxis operated by Uber Technologies and WeRide.
These vehicles use Level 4 autonomous technology, which means they can handle all driving tasks on their own within specific mapped areas. The robotaxis can steer, accelerate, brake, follow traffic rules, and react to road situations without any help from a human driver, as long as they stay inside the approved operating zones.
This launch marks a major move toward smarter and more modern transportation in the UAE. It shows how the country is investing in new technology to make daily travel easier, safer, and more efficient. The service is expected to improve mobility for residents and visitors, reduce traffic pressure, and contribute to the region’s long-term vision for innovative and sustainable transport solutions.
