Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority has started a pilot project that uses drones to clean traffic signals across the city, marking a new step toward smarter and safer road maintenance.
The use of drones improves safety by removing the need for workers to use manlifts or operate at height near busy roads. This reduces risks to staff and helps traffic continue to flow smoothly during cleaning operations. The project also helps cut operational costs while lowering fuel consumption and water usage, making the process more environmentally friendly.
According to early results, drones are able to clean one side of a traffic signal in just three to four minutes. This has reduced overall work time by up to 50 percent and lowered costs by around 15 percent compared to traditional cleaning methods. The faster process also means less disruption to road users.
This initiative reflects Dubai’s continued focus on adopting smart technologies to improve efficiency and sustainability in public services.
