Astronomers in Abu Dhabi have successfully photographed the crescent of Shaban 1447 AH, marking the start of the Islamic month of Shaban.
The image was captured on January 19 by the Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory, part of the International Astronomy Center, at 11am UAE time, when the moon was 6.7 degrees from the sun.
This follows the end of Rajab, officially announced by the UAE Fatwa Council. Ramadan 2026 is expected to begin on February 18 or 19, depending on moon sighting.
Authorities will confirm the start of Ramadan after observing the crescent at the end of Shaban.
