UAE Announces June 15 Public Holiday for Private and Public Employees

The United Arab Emirates has announced a public holiday on Monday, June 15, in observance of the Islamic New Year, granting a three-day weekend to employees across both the public and private sectors.

The holiday follows the regular weekend on Saturday and Sunday, allowing residents and workers an extended break before returning to work on Tuesday, June 16. Authorities confirmed that all government offices and private sector workplaces will remain closed on the occasion.

The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, marks the beginning of the year 1448 AH in the Islamic lunar calendar. The occasion commemorates the historic migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers from Makkah to Madinah, an event that holds immense significance in Islamic history.

Unlike festive celebrations associated with some other holidays, the Islamic New Year is generally observed as a solemn and reflective occasion. Muslims around the world use the day to remember the values of faith, perseverance, and sacrifice, while reflecting on the lessons of the Hijrah and the start of a new year in the Islamic calendar.
