Deira International School has made history by becoming the first school in Dubai to install a live beehive on its campus, offering more than 2,500 students and staff a unique opportunity to learn about biodiversity, sustainability, and the importance of pollinators through direct observation.
The initiative transforms environmental education into a practical, hands-on experience that connects students with nature in a meaningful way.
The project was launched in collaboration with Terra Expo City Dubai as part of the Hundred Hives programme, which aims to raise awareness about the essential role bees play in supporting ecosystems, maintaining biodiversity, and ensuring global food security.
Students will gain valuable insight into how bees contribute to agriculture and the environment while learning about the challenges these vital pollinators face.
Educators believe the initiative will encourage a stronger sense of environmental responsibility among young people, inspire future generations of beekeepers and conservationists, and promote sustainable practices both inside and outside the classroom.
By bringing a working beehive onto the school campus, the programme provides an engaging real-world learning experience that highlights the importance of protecting nature for future generations.
