Twelve-year-old Filipino student Warren Bacongallo has won the UAE Scripps Spelling Bee, taking home a cash prize of Dh15,000 and earning the opportunity to represent the UAE at the international finals in Washington, DC. His outstanding spelling skills and calm performance on stage helped him secure the top position in a highly competitive event.
The achievement became even more special for the family as his 10-year-old brother, Rei Martus, finished as the second runner-up in the same competition. Meanwhile, Inayah Zafar Siddiqui from Abu Dhabi claimed the first runner-up position. The strong performances by these young participants made the contest both exciting and inspiring.
The Bacongallo brothers are homeschooled under the American curriculum by their mother, who carefully guides their studies. In preparation for the spelling bee, they followed a strict routine that included studying detailed word lists, practicing with flashcards, and doing daily pronunciation drills. Their consistent hard work, discipline, and focus played a major role in their success.
Organised by Vishwa Babbar, the competition brought together around 850 students from 145 schools, representing more than 40 nationalities. The large and diverse participation reflects the UAE’s multicultural environment and strong focus on education.
Beyond the prizes and titles, the spelling bee serves a greater purpose. It helps children build self-confidence, improve their language skills, and overcome stage fear. Events like these highlight the importance of dedication, practice, and perseverance in achieving academic excellence.
