Researchers at University College London (UCL) have broken a world record for wireless data transmission, reaching speeds of 938 gigabits per second. To put this into perspective, it’s 5,000 times faster than the speeds offered by current 5G networks.
This major achievement was made possible by combining radio and optical technologies, which help avoid the problem of crowded frequency channels. The new technology is expected to pave the way for the arrival of ultra-fast 6G networks in the coming years.
With 6G, tasks that take several minutes or even hours today would be completed in a matter of seconds. For example, downloading a 4K Ultra HD movie could take just 0.12 seconds. Additionally, this breakthrough will significantly improve internet connectivity in busy places, like stadiums or shopping malls, without the frustrating slowdowns we sometimes experience today.
