The city of Dhaid in Sharjah hosted the 13th edition of the Al Ramdha Challenge last Sunday — a one-of-a-kind cultural and sporting event that brings tradition and endurance together. In this challenge, people walk barefoot across hot desert sand right under the midday sun.
Participants cover a distance of 150 to 200 metres as they race toward the finish line, all while following strict rules. The challenge is based on the Emirati word “Ramdha,” which describes the burning heat of the sun on desert sand.
The event was created by Emirati adventurer Awad bin Mujren. He worked with doctors to make sure the activity has health benefits and is safe for participants. It is not just about testing physical strength, but also about honoring the traditional way of life in the UAE desert.
Today, the Al Ramdha Challenge stands as one of the most special and meaningful events in Sharjah, attracting both locals and visitors who want to experience a piece of Emirati culture in a powerful and memorable way.
