UAE’s First Net-Zero-Energy Mosque, Inspired by Historic Al Bidyah, Opens in Masdar City

Masdar City has inaugurated a state-of-the-art net-zero-energy mosque, drawing architectural inspiration from the UAE’s historic Al Bidyah Mosque. Designed to accommodate up to 1,300 worshippers during the holy month of Ramadan, the mosque stands as a symbol of the country’s commitment to sustainability while preserving its cultural and religious heritage.

The fully solar-powered mosque generates as much energy as it consumes over the course of a year, making it a model for environmentally responsible places of worship. Its sustainable features include passive ventilation systems that reduce reliance on mechanical cooling, energy-efficient LED lighting, advanced district cooling, and a greywater recycling system used for landscape irrigation. These elements significantly lower the building’s carbon footprint while ensuring comfort for worshippers.

Architecturally, the mosque blends tradition with innovation. The 42-metre-wide column-free prayer hall offers an open and unobstructed space for congregational prayers, while the 20.2-metre minaret reflects classic Emirati design through a modern engineering lens. The structure’s aesthetic pays homage to the simplicity and spirituality of early Islamic architecture, reimagined with cutting-edge materials and techniques.

In recognition of its environmental excellence, the mosque has achieved LEED Platinum certification, a 4 Pearl Estidama rating, and official Net-Zero Energy certification. Beyond serving as a place of worship, it also functions as a vibrant community hub, hosting faith-based programmes, educational initiatives, and family-oriented events throughout the year.
