The UAE’s push for clean energy is gaining momentum, with Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, set to become the Chair Elect of the Board of Directors of the World Nuclear Association (WNA) in 2024.This is an important milestone for the UAE’s nuclear energy program, as the WNA is responsible for supporting the development of nuclear energy programs globally, with its members accounting for 70% of the world’s nuclear energy generation. Al Hammadi’s appointment highlights the UAE’s commitment to collaborating with the international nuclear energy community, sharing best practices, knowledge, and lessons learned.
ENEC is responsible for the construction and operation of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant in Abu Dhabi. With four reactors and a total capacity of 5,600 megawatts, the plant will provide around 25% of the UAE’s peak electricity demand, with the third unit already operating commercially. Barakah is a successful case study for other nations looking to diversify their energy portfolio during a time of international energy crises.
The UAE’s Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program has been hailed as a global success story, offering a blueprint for other nations pursuing clean electricity to achieve energy security and sustainability. Al Hammadi credits the UAE’s visionary leadership in transforming its energy sector and developing its Peaceful Nuclear Energy Program for his new position as Chair Elect of the WNA Board of Directors.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is widely recognized as one of the most advanced nuclear plants in the world, delivering energy security, powering sustainable economic growth, and contributing to the UAE’s Net Zero strategy by 2050. Moreover, Al Hammadi is also the President of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), elected by members in October 2022.
The UAE’s continued collaboration with the international nuclear energy community and Al Hammadi’s leadership roles in the WNA and WANO demonstrate the country’s determination to shape the future of nuclear energy. With Al Hammadi at the helm of the WNA, the UAE will have a strong voice in the development of nuclear energy programs globally, and the country will continue to serve as a benchmark for other nations looking to pursue nuclear energy as a vital source of clean electricity to achieve their energy security and sustainability goals.
