UAE’s Scientist-Astronaut Wants to Make ‘Space Travel as Normal as Flying’

Scientist and astronaut Malik “Mac” Malkawi, who founded Borderless Labs Inc (Blinc), is working towards a future where travelling to space is as common and accessible as taking a commercial flight.

Blinc is based in Abu Dhabi and focuses on preparing people for space through astronaut training programmes, human spaceflight experiences, and education in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM). A key part of its mission is to support and inspire underserved communities, especially across the Middle East and North Africa, by giving them exposure to space science and advanced technology.

Recently, Blinc successfully carried out its first G-force aerobatic test flight in Ras Al Khaimah. This flight was designed to simulate the intense forces astronauts experience during a rocket launch, marking an important step in developing realistic space training programmes.

Malkawi says the UAE is an ideal location for space-related projects because of its advanced infrastructure, strong national vision, and diverse natural landscapes. These factors, he believes, provide the perfect environment for training, testing, and innovation in space exploration.

Looking ahead, Blinc plans to set up multiple centres across the UAE. These centres will focus on astronaut training, immersive spaceflight experiences, and STEAM education, helping to build local talent and inspire future generations to take part in the global space industry.
