Etihad Rail has awarded a contract to Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, to install a 600-kilowatt peak solar PV system and a 2.56-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system at the Ghuweifat freight terminal, located near the Saudi border. This project aims to provide up to 85% of the terminal’s electricity needs through clean, renewable energy.
The agreement was signed during the Global Rail 2024 event held in Abu Dhabi, and it marks an important step towards greener energy solutions in the UAE’s transportation sector. By harnessing solar energy, the terminal will reduce its dependence on traditional power sources and significantly lower its environmental impact. This solar PV system is expected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 8,500 tonnes, contributing to the UAE’s ambitious Net Zero by 2050 Strategy.
This project is part of the country’s broader commitment to promoting sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. By integrating solar power and battery storage, Etihad Rail is leading the way in adopting renewable energy for its operations. This initiative not only reduces the terminal’s carbon footprint but also sets a new standard for energy efficiency in the region’s freight transportation industry.
The solar and battery system will play a critical role in helping the terminal operate more efficiently and sustainably, demonstrating Etihad Rail’s dedication to environmental responsibility and innovation.
