Abu Dhabi Allows Farms and Rest Houses to Generate Their Own Electricity

Abu Dhabi has introduced a new Solar Energy Self-Supply Policy that allows farms, ranches, and rest houses to generate and consume their own electricity on-site using solar power systems. The policy also provides the option of installing battery storage, enabling users to store excess energy produced during the day for use during the evening. The initiative reflects a broader effort to modernize the energy sector and encourage more efficient and sustainable power usage, particularly in agricultural and rural areas.

The rollout will take place in phases, initially targeting farms and remote properties. By promoting self-generation, authorities aim to support smarter energy management, improve long-term operational efficiency, and gradually reduce reliance on centralized power generation. Although short-term financial savings may vary depending on installation costs and energy usage patterns, the policy is expected to deliver long-term economic and environmental benefits. It will also contribute to greater grid stability by easing demand pressure during peak hours.

Under the new framework, customers must obtain the required licenses and comply with technical and safety standards before installing solar systems. At this stage, exporting excess electricity back to the grid will not be permitted, meaning all generated power must be used on-site. The initiative comes as electricity demand continues to rise due to population growth, rapid digital expansion, increased use of artificial intelligence technologies, and the broader shift toward electrification across various sectors.
