Abu Dhabi has announced the expansion of its self-driving taxi service to Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands after the project crossed 600,000 kilometres of safe, accident-free travel.
The autonomous taxi program is run by the Integrated Transport Centre and now has 22 driverless cars that have completed 40,000 successful trips so far. Impressively, 99% of these rides were fully autonomous without any human backup.
The service already runs in key areas such as Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, helping Abu Dhabi build its image as a leader in smart and modern transport. People’s trust in this technology is growing because of its excellent safety record and constant live monitoring to make sure every ride stays safe.
Officials say this smart taxi service is an important part of Abu Dhabi’s Vision 2030 plan, which focuses on cutting harmful emissions, using cleaner energy, and introducing advanced transport solutions to make travel smoother and more connected.
By expanding the driverless taxis to more busy areas, the city wants to encourage more people to choose eco-friendly options instead of regular cars. The plan is to reduce traffic jams, lower pollution, and provide residents and visitors with safer, modern ways to get around.
So far, passengers have praised the comfort, safety, and convenience of these futuristic rides. As Abu Dhabi keeps growing as a smart city, the success of its self-driving taxis shows how technology can improve daily life and create a more sustainable future for everyone living and working in the emirate.
