Dubai Airports Set to Launch Largest Airport Rooftop Solar Panel Project Worldwide

Dubai Airports and Emirates have teamed up with the Etihad Clean Energy Development Company to promote sustainability through solar energy. They recently announced an exciting initiative to develop large-scale solar projects, which will include the world’s largest rooftop solar panel installation at an airport. This ambitious plan aims for Emirates to power 37% of its Engineering Centre operations using clean energy sources.

The project will be carried out in phases and involves the installation of a total of 62,904 solar panels at Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central Airport (DWC). Once completed, these solar panels are expected to generate an impressive 60,346 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy each year. The goal is to have the entire system up and running by 2026.

One of the significant benefits of this solar initiative is its environmental impact. The energy produced by these solar panels is projected to offset approximately 23,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. This reduction is equivalent to removing about 5,000 cars from the roads, which highlights the project’s contribution to combating climate change.

Furthermore, the clean energy generated will meet 6.5% of the power needs for Dubai International Airport and 20% of the energy requirements for Dubai World Central Airport. This initiative aligns perfectly with Dubai’s vision for sustainable airport operations and reinforces the commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable future for the aviation industry. By harnessing solar energy, Dubai Airports and Emirates are taking significant steps toward reducing their carbon footprint and promoting environmental responsibility.
