Rare Venus-Jupiter Meeting to Light Up UAE Skies From June 7-9

Residents across the UAE will have a chance to witness a remarkable celestial spectacle as Venus and Jupiter, the two brightest planets visible from Earth, appear unusually close together in the evening sky on June 8 and 9. The rare astronomical event is expected to attract stargazers, photographers, and astronomy enthusiasts eager to catch a glimpse of the stunning planetary pairing.

Shortly after sunset, the two planets will shine prominently above the western horizon, appearing less than two degrees apart from one another. The phenomenon, often referred to by astronomers and skywatchers as a “planetary conjunction” or a “cosmic kiss,” creates the illusion that the planets are almost touching. The best viewing time is expected to be between 30 and 60 minutes after sunset, with clear skies and an unobstructed western horizon offering the most favorable conditions.

Despite their apparent closeness, Venus and Jupiter remain separated by hundreds of millions of kilometres in space. Astronomers explain that the striking visual effect is caused by the alignment of the planets as seen from Earth rather than any actual proximity between them. Such close apparent encounters between bright planets are relatively uncommon and often rank among the most memorable astronomical events visible without specialized equipment.

Experts say the conjunction will be easily visible to the naked eye, although binoculars or a small telescope may provide an even more impressive view. The event is being hailed as one of the standout skywatching highlights of 2026, offering a rare opportunity for people of all ages to observe one of nature’s most captivating displays in the night sky.
