UAE to Restore Historic Umayyad Mosque in Syria’s Damascus

The United Arab Emirates has announced plans to restore the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, marking a major cultural and heritage initiative aimed at preserving one of the Islamic world’s most significant landmarks. The restoration project is being carried out with the support of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, widely known as the “Mother of the Nation,” who also serves as Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation. The initiative reflects the UAE’s continued involvement in humanitarian, cultural, and reconstruction efforts across the region.

The announcement was made during an official visit to the Umayyad Mosque by Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of State at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During her visit to Damascus, she toured sections of the centuries-old mosque and reviewed areas requiring restoration and preservation work. Officials described the project as part of broader efforts to protect Islamic heritage sites and support the cultural identity of historic cities affected by years of conflict and deterioration.

The Umayyad Mosque is considered one of the oldest and most important mosques in the Islamic world, attracting visitors and worshippers from across the globe due to its historical, architectural, and religious significance. Located in the heart of Damascus, the mosque has stood for centuries as a symbol of Islamic civilization and cultural heritage. Restoration experts are expected to focus on preserving its architectural details, historical structures, and artistic features while ensuring the site remains accessible for future generations.

The UAE’s involvement in the restoration project has been welcomed by cultural observers and heritage preservation advocates, who view the initiative as an important step toward safeguarding historic landmarks in the region. Analysts say the project also highlights growing regional cooperation in rebuilding and preserving sites of religious and historical importance following years of instability in parts of the Middle East.
