The UAE’s innovative “flying ICU” is taking critical medical care beyond hospital walls, transporting critically ill patients across borders while providing specialised treatment throughout long-distance journeys.
Operating from Abu Dhabi, the specially equipped aircraft functions as an intensive care unit in the sky. In its first five months, the service has completed nearly 1,000 flying hours across 20 countries and five continents, highlighting its growing role in international medical transfers.
The aircraft can travel non-stop for up to 7,400 kilometres, allowing medical teams to continuously monitor and support patients during lengthy flights. Its missions have included complex cases involving newborn babies requiring advanced medical care.
Through a bed-to-bed transfer model, patients can be moved directly from one hospital to another while maintaining continuous critical care throughout the journey. The service represents a major advancement in specialised air medical transportation.
