Abu Dhabi has recorded its first-ever Olive Ridley turtle nest, marking a major milestone for marine conservation and biodiversity in the emirate.
The rare discovery was made on Saadiyat Island during a routine coastal patrol, adding a new dimension to the region’s efforts to protect marine life.
The Olive Ridley turtle laid 109 eggs at the nesting site on March 29. Nearly two months later, on May 25, hatchlings began emerging, with 40 successfully making their way into the sea.
The successful nesting and hatchling activity highlight the potential of Abu Dhabi’s coastal environment to support this species.
The discovery officially adds the Olive Ridley to Abu Dhabi’s confirmed nesting turtle species and provides researchers with valuable information about the emirate’s marine ecosystem.
It also underscores the importance of continued monitoring and conservation efforts to protect nesting habitats and preserve the region’s rich marine biodiversity.
