Dubai to Fine $136,000 for Using Foul Language Online

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is cracking down on offensive language and defamatory remarks made online. The Public Prosecution has issued a warning, stating that individuals who engage in such behavior may face severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines of up to $136,000 (AED 500,000). These regulations encompass all forms of electronic communication, such as social media and messaging platforms.

The UAE authorities are particularly focused on curtailing the use of foul language directed at on duty public sector employees on the internet. Offenders who engage in such behavior can expect harsh punishments, including imprisonment or fines ranging from AED 250,000 to AED 500,000. These measures are in accordance with Article 43 of the Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021, which aims to combat electronic crimes and rumors.

To raise public awareness about the country’s criminal laws and encourage positive conduct, the Public Prosecution has launched an initiative called Waey. This program encompasses various projects designed to promote inclusivity, educate the public through media channels, offer legal advice, and engage with the community.

In an effort to ensure that its message reaches all segments of society, especially the youth, Waey will leverage media outlets and technology. Moreover, the prosecution will not only penalize individuals for using slanderous language on social media and messaging platforms but will also seek more severe consequences for those who target public sector employees in the course of their duties.
