The UAE has marked a significant milestone in satellite communications with a breakthrough that could soon enable smartphones to send SMS and SOS messages even in areas without mobile network coverage.
The advancement represents a major step toward ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for users in remote and hard-to-reach locations.
Space42 successfully demonstrated its Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology in collaboration with Skylo Technologies by connecting standard Android smartphones to the Thuraya-4 satellite without the need for any additional hardware or specialized equipment.
This innovation allows existing smartphones to communicate directly through satellite networks, making the technology more accessible to everyday users.
The new service is expected to be especially valuable for people traveling through deserts, mountainous regions, offshore waters, and other locations where conventional cellular networks are unavailable.
Beyond emergency SOS messaging, the platform is designed to support text messaging, location sharing, and a range of future satellite-enabled communication services, enhancing safety and reliability for users.
Commercial rollout is anticipated later this year, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to advancing space technology and digital innovation.
The achievement further strengthens the country’s position as a global leader in next-generation connectivity, helping pave the way for more resilient communication infrastructure and expanding access to reliable services regardless of location.
